In order to help our students better understand mathematical concepts and do well on the OST, we are using several texts and resources. TPS' main math text is called Math Expressions. We are using several grade levels of this text to best suit our students abilities. We are also using a supplemental text that TPS ordered for intermediate special education classes called Knowing Math. This text combines math concepts of 4th, 5th, and 6th grade into an easier to understand format. We are also using OST Coach materials to reinforce and reteach concepts. We also utilize the internet when we need reinforcement and reteaching materials.
The goal of our math program is for students to be able to explain and model how they would solve a problem. It's no longer about just finding the answer and writing an equation. Students who can explain their thinking process and model a problem with concrete objects or draw a picture or diagram to show it are not as frustrated with math as students who just memorize facts without understanding how the concept actually works.
When Miss Wheeler & Mrs. Bolding (and many of you parents as well) went to school, we learned to add and subtract large numbers by carrying or borrowing but we didn't understand why or really what we were doing. Today, we teach the students to draw place value charts, base ten blocks, or use expanded form to show/explain the process. This skill is necessary to do well on the OST..
If you are having problems understanding how we do math now or would just like to be able to help your child better with his/her homework, get in touch with us. We'll be happy to schedule a time for you to come in before or after school and we'll show you how we're teaching the students.
